Step 1

Browse to OpenDNS.com and sign up for an account. DNS is a protocol that converts text and numeral Web addresses into the respective IP addresses your computer needs to connect to a Web server or another computer over the network. Internet service providers usually assign a DNS service, but you can choose any service you want.

Step 2

Click the “Dashboard” icon on your screen if you don’t have a router. Click “Network connection”. Select your connection and click “Properties.” Select “Internet Protocol (TCP /IP).” Click “Properties” and select the radio button for “Use the following DNS server address”. In the first DNS server input field, type “208.67.222.222” and in the alternate DNS server field, type “208.67.220.220”. Press OK.”

Step 3

Configure DNS settings on your router, if you have one, instead of on your computer. The router filters traffic before reaching any computer in your home network, which increases security. It also allows you to change the settings only once, instead of having to configure each computer one by one. Find the DNS options tab on your router setup menu and change it to “208.67.222.222” for the main DNS server and “208.67.220.220” for the replacement DNS server.

Click to save.” You may need to restart your router to update settings. Specific instructions for your router can be found on the OpenDNS website.

Step 4

Sign in to your account on the OpenDNS.com and click “Settings”. Choose your desired filtering level. To block porn and phishing sites from trying to steal your personal information through deception, select “Low.” To block pornography, scams, adult websites, and illegal activity, select “Censorship.” If you want to block all pornographic, illegal activities, video sites, social networks, and time-wasting websites, opt for “High.” After you select, click “Apply”.

Step 5

Block specific websites. If you want to block a particular website, add it in “Manage your own domain name.” After you enter the domain, click “Add domain”.

Step 6

Check your settings. Wait two hours to install filtering and block your website from being updated on the OpenDNS server. Then, search for websites that need to be blocked. You can perform a general search for pornography on Google by entering a query such as “free porn” and selecting one of the search results. If your settings are working normally, you’ll see a report error message, “Blocked sites [site addresses] are not allowed on this network.”
